Arthur Burke woke up this morning in a strange office with a lump on his head, and he has no idea where he’s been for the last three weeks. Burke has read the story of the murder of George Digby in the morning paper and is afraid that he had something to do with it. Burke calls Blackie to help him find out.

John Blake seems to have committed the perfect crime. He has killed Thomas Evers, just as he told Blackie that he would. Blake also has a perfect alibi and seems to be making a fool out of Blackie! John Blake, a student of crime, has come urgently to see Blackie. He wants to know why a murderer is always caught? Blackie replies, “That’s easy because they always make a mistake.” John Blake would like to differ and informs Blackie that he is going to murder a man named Thomas Evers, he won’t tell him where or when but defies Blackie to prove it.

There's a dead body in Blackie's apartment. After Blackie is lured out with a decoy telephone call, the body disappears. Then, stolen pearls find their way into Blackie's safe! Mary and Blackie return home early from the pictures to find a corpse in the dining room. While Blackie tries to explain to Mary that he knows nothing about the body, Charlie Kingston phones to say he needs to see Blackie urgently and asks him to come to his apartment.

A man about to expose a criminal on television is poisoned by a glass of water. Three other people, however, drank the water without ill effects! Boston Blackie and Mary Wesley seem to be settling in to watch a TV show with Inspector Faraday. As the set warms up, they see Inspector Faraday and three other men seated around a table. Mary comments that the inspector seems a little nervous as he keeps hitting the water pitcher, and so does another member of the panel. But Blackie explains it's probably very warm under all those lights.

Shorty’s been arrested by Inspector Friday for sticking up a gas station and even though he told them it was a guy named Donald Bolton, Shorty has ended up in jail. Inspector Friday informs Mary to tell Blackie that Shorty’s guilty, and he’s to keep his nose out of this case.
