Le roi Philippe IV fait arrêter tous les Templiers de France et saisit leurs biens avec l'aide du pape. Averti de ce complot, William St. Clair réussit de justesse à s'échapper. Fuyant le pays en compagnie de quelques centaines de frères d'armes, il emporte le trésor de l'ordre. Face à cette traîtrise de la couronne, le chevalier décide qu'il est temps d'abandonner le passé : il libère ses hommes de leurs vœux d'obéissance à la papauté et les mène une dernière fois au combat lors de la bataille de Bannockburn.

En 1187, la bataille de Hattin voit la victoire éclatante de l'armée menée par Saladin contre les croisés. Échappant de justesse à la mort, le Templier Alexander Sinclair prend la décision de dissimuler son appartenance à l'ordre et se retrouve prisonnier.

Vivant parmi ses ennemis, le jeune chevalier ne tarde pas à se lier d'amitié avec eux. Deux ans plus tard, de l'autre côté de la Méditerranée, son cousin, André St. Clair, s'apprête à suivre Richard Cœur de Lion lors de la troisième croisade.

France, 1095. Le pape appelle à une reconquête des lieux saints, annonçant la première croisade. Quelques années plus tard, Hugh de Payns erre dans Jérusalem mise à feu et à sang. Envoyé par une confrérie dont il n'a plus de nouvelles afin de découvrir le trésor caché de la ville du Christ, ce chevalier traumatisé par la guerre fonde un nouvel ordre de moines. Ils prendront le nom de Templiers.

Thanks to the stratagems of Bohemund de Hauteville, leader of the Apulian Normans, the Crusade has taken the city of Antioch, and just in time. Once the besiegers, Bohemund and his men are about to become the besieged - a huge Turkish-led army, commanded by the fearsome General Kerbogha, is fast approaching. Provisions are desperately needed, but the surrounding countryside is near barren and the storerooms of Antioch much depleted. The Crusaders will not hold out for long without falling prey to starvation.

1096. The Pope has called for a crusade to free Jerusalem, and half the warriors of Europe have responded. Among them is the Norman, Count Bohemund, one-time enemy of Byzantium. In company with his warrior nephew, Tancred of Lecce, Bohemund must once more cross the Adriatic to the lands of the Byzantine Empire. His first task, pushing back the infidel Turks, calls for an uneasy alliance with old enemy Emperor Alexius. But can the Crusaders trust the wily Emperor?

11th century Italy. The domination of the Normans is causing trouble. At their head is the feared Robert de Hauteville, the 'Guiscard', who has colonised much of Italy and commands the triple Dukedom of the extended Norman family. But Robert has made many enemies, including the ever-powerful papacy in Rome. The newly elected Pope Gregory exercises his vendetta against the Normans by encouraging them to sail to Byzantium and fight the Turks. But first he must deal with the Guiscard.

It is 1347 and the French, after a crushing defeat at Crécy, are licking their wounds while their king raises a new army. Locked into a fruitless siege, the English are camped in the marshes around Calais. Among them is foot soldier and archer Martin Kemp, whose dreams of serving his king and reliving the chivalrous adventures of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table are tempered by the gory and brutal reality of siege warfare. Having narrowly escaped death in a surprise attack from the French, Kemp sees a chance for a reprieve when a shaky truce is signed.

When Martin Kemp joins the English army in order to avoid the hangman, he may just be delaying the inevitable. While he remains hopeful that at least there's the chance for some heroics, the reality is very different. Kemp's war is instead a terrifying odyssey through the panic and confusion of his first battle, the brutal realities of siege warfare, and eventually to the field of Crécy, where he faces the armoured might of the French nobility. But as an elite longbowman, when it comes to winning or losing, he could have a vital - though dangerous - part to play.
