Écrite à l'origine en une série de neuf articles publiée par Paris Matinal au début de l'année 1928, cette "enquête" mêle l'humour macabre et la poésie des rues de Londres aux descriptions des crimes d'un assassin que l'on imagine dandy. Ce texte envoute celui qui le lit comme celui qui l'entend, la fascination morbide qui s'opère tient sans doute au contraste très fort entre l'horreur absolue des crimes qui furent commis et la beauté du langage employé par le poète qui les décrit.

Un homme blessé, épuisé, est abandonné par son compagnon dans le désert du Grand Nord canadien. Malgré le supplice que lui impose la faim et qui l'accompagne continuellement, il poursuit inexorablement son chemin poussé par la petite flamme de vie qui brille encore en lui. Un loup, également blessé et affamé, le suit en permanence. Tous deux à bout de forces se surveillent mutuellement tout en se traînant sur la glace : qui mangera l'autre ? Qui survivra ?

C'est l'été indien, la nature sauvage à perte de vue mais l'homme se blesse et voit s'éloigner son compagnon de route inexorablement. Déboussolé par la douleur et bientôt la faim, l'homme s'accroche à la vie.
