The book of Judges tells of those who were called to lead God's people and the choices they made, both good and bad.

his is an in-depth study on the book of Judges, which takes a look at the history and culture of the nation of Israel as they failed to obey Yahweh and live righteously in the Promised Land that Yahweh had given them. This study will look at what it means to be a godly leader and what led the Israelite's failures.

After Joshua's death, the tribes of Israel continue their conquest of the southern regions of Canaan, but they are unable to cleanse the land thoroughly of its native inhabitants. God declares that these remaining people will be an impediment to Israel's enjoyment of the promised land. Generations pass, and the younger Israelites turn away from God, intermarrying with the Canaanites and worshipping the local deities. God threatens to abandon Israel because of the disobedience of the youth, but he selects a series of judges, or rulers, to act as temporary leaders for the people.

In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. This repeated phrase in the book of Judges describes a period of history that has been referred to as the "Dark Ages” of the nation of Israel. Each time the Israelites fell into sin, they suffered dire consequences. But when they cried out to God, God responded with great mercy and sent a judge.
