If you lived in a different place and had a different job, couldn't you have a different life? Ginny Masters manages a popular boutique hotel in Seattle and manages it with aplomb. But the daily challenges and irritations of a fast-paced job and a demanding boss are starting to get to her. Jacqueline Potter manages her grandfather’s fishing lodge in Idaho because it was the only job she could find after graduating with her hospitality degree. She’s grateful for the work but longs for a more sophisticated and cosmopolitan life she’s just not going to find in this backwoods town.

Being a small dungeon on the outskirts of town in the backwaters of an unimportant kingdom isn't easy, but Kelsey's done her best to level up and become the best dungeon she can be: Digging a hole of ever-increasing depth and complexity. When ghost hunter and medium M.J. Holliday appears on a television show called Haunted Possessions, she encounters an evil knife that releases a demon. Now all hell has broken loose in the haunted hotel where M.J. is staying and its up to her to give the uninvited guest an early checkout.

Suliel is returning to the walled city. But while she has the ability to assess others' primary loyalties, she remains deeply uncertain as to whom she can trust. Indeed, she even doubts her own mother's intentions. Fortunately, as she surveys her surroundings and navigates court intrigue, she's guided by a voice in her head: that of Kelsey, a sentient dungeon with an ax to grind. Unable to stifle her snarky attitude, Kelsey's avatar offends the black-eyed god Riadi when she expresses her desire to free the mortal races—a mission she expects Suliel to play a significant role in.
