Story0
The poet Katherine Philips was called "The Matchless Orinda" in her day and was well known for her works, both personal and political. She was a staunch Royalist (a supporter of Charles I and his son during the English Civil Wars) and wrote poetic defenses of the monarchy. She was also part of a literary coterie, in which she and her friends had "code names." Philips herself was "Orinda," her husband "Antenor," and her friend Anne Owen "Lucasia." She is perhaps best known today for her passionate poems celebrating female friendship. (Summary by Elizabeth Klett)

Imagine a world where chaos erupts every day—where systemic darkness seeps into every corner, choking out hope and leaving scars that run deep. Anna Nomaly pulls back the curtain on true stories—raw, brutal, and unflinching—that reveal how real people battle against despair, violence, and neglect simply to stay alive. It’s a visceral descent into the heart of darkness, where hope is fragile and every moment is a fight for survival. These are stories of resilience carved from pain, rebellion born in the shadows, and a relentless human spirit that refuses to break. If you’re ready to ...

Story0
Experience the brilliance of David Garrick’s celebrated 18th-century adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic, Taming of the Shrew. With a masterful touch, Garrick condenses the original five acts into a captivating three, omitting much of the subplot involving Bianca and her suitors. While some critics, like Edgar Allan Poe, dismissed Garrick’s version as a chaotic mishmash of nonsense, it became the preferred rendition for theatrical companies well into the 19th century. Join us as we explore this intriguing interpretation that continues to spark debate and delight audiences. - Summary by ...

Story0
To this day, Easter Island, with its magnificent stone structures, remains an enigma. Katherine Routledge was part of an exhaustive archaeological expedition to try and find answers. While the study was enlightening, it did not answer all the questions the party had. Some critics suggested it was unsuccessful for not solving the riddle. Others said it was disappointing as it removed all mystery from the island. The truth was somewhere in the middle. - Summary by LynneT

Story0
Katherine Mansfield was just 22 when these captivating stories first came to life in book form. Despite her later reluctance to see them republished—deeming them mere juvenilia—these tales offer a fascinating glimpse into the early stirrings of a remarkable literary talent. While only a handful of the stories are set in a German boarding house, reminiscent of the place where Mansfield navigated the complexities of an unwelcome pregnancy that tragically ended in miscarriage, they resonate with wit and insight. Throughout the collection, Mansfields sharp humor and palpable discontent with ...

Story0
In this captivating collection, Katherine Mansfield explores the complex tapestry of human emotions and relationships. A critic once noted that while these stories are far from cheerful, they lack the pervasive trivial discomfort found in much of modern fiction. With a diverse array of forms and themes, Mansfields work serves as a bold precursor to the literary territory later claimed by her contemporary Virginia Woolf. The male characters often come across as frustratingly rigid, while the central female figures teeter between moments of ecstatic joy and stark neurosis. Throughout, children ...
