A single Arn, Quafijinivon, the last member of the race that created the Hork-Bajir has survived. He has seen his entire people wiped out. He has seen the Hork-Bajir enslaved. Now, after a lifetime of planning and plotting, he wants to get his revenge on the Yeerks. And he wants to atone for the problems the Arn have caused. He is old and weak. Cassie is on her own. There's no Jake to lead the mission. No Marco to tell stupid jokes. And no Rachel to say "Let's do it!" It's just Cassie. Alone. In Australia. It all began when the latest Animorphs' mission took a bad turn–and Cassie hid in the cargo hold of a jumbo jet. Unfortunately for her, that jet took off, bound for Australia. And what Cassie didn't realize was that the Yeerks were still on her trail–a lone "Andalite bandit" is a pretty hot target.

The pint-sized Helmacrons may have departed Earth, but they haven't finished causing trouble for the Animorphs and Ax. They left behind a damaged ship—containing morph-tracking technology. Now the Yeerks have found the ship, and are launching a full scale Animorphs hunt! As if avoiding the Yeerks' new tracking system isn't hard enough, Cassie and the others realize they must keep the morphing cube moving if they don't want the Yeerks to find it. But when Cassie tries to hide the Andalites' cube, it accidentally touches a Cape Buffalo!

Cassie and the other Animorphs have a few little problems. A few very little problems. Actually, the problems call themselves Helmacrons. They're less than an inch tall, and they're pretty upset at Cassie. They believe she stole their ship. Cassie thought it was just a toy and gave it to charity. Now the Helmacrons want it back. So the Animorphs have a new dilemma. Because the Helmacrons have their own secret weapon: They can shrink other beings down to their size. And if they don't get their ship back soon, everyone on the planet is in for a little surprise.

There's a new rumor in town. Someone has discovered an item that proves life on other planets exists, and they've been hiding it on a base called Zone 91, the most secret place on Earth. Cassie and the other Animorphs already know about life on other planets. Too well. Their enemies the Yeerks will try to access Zone 91, to find out if what's there will threaten their mission to conquer to the planet. So the Animorphs decide to pay Zone 91 and the Yeerks a little visit. But what they discover is not at all what they expect.

There's something pretty weird going on in the woods behind Cassie's house, the place where Ax and Tobias call home. It seems the Yeerks have figured out one very important fact: Andalites cannot survive without a feeding ground. Visser Three knows the "Andalite bandits" don't feed where he does, so there can only be one other place. Now the Animorphs have to figure out a way to stop a bogus logging operation. Because if Visser Three finds Ax in the woods, nothing will stop him from finding the Animorphs.

What would have happened if the Animorphs had never existed? If Jake and the others had taken the long way home from the mall that night, instead of cutting through the abandoned construction site? If they'd never met Elfangor. Never rescued Ax. Never heard of the Yeerks.... Jake's finally weakened. After one particularly grisly battle, the Drode hits him when he's down and offers the Animorphs' leader an escape from the terrifying pressure. He'll take Jake back to the mall and reverse the decision that started the Animorphs. It's an offer Jake's too tired to refuse.
