No one could have predicted even two years ago that an African American would take the oath of office as president of the United States in January of 2009. For many, the occasion marks the climax to the civil rights movement and the fulfillment of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream that Americans could be judged on the content of their character and not the color of their skin. This collection, with about 400 letters from Americans of all walks of life, is being created to stand as a symbol of this exciting moment in history.

In the summer of 1964, the FBI found the smoldering remains of the station wagon that James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman had been driving before their disappearance. Shortly after this awful discovery, Julie Kabat’s beloved brother Luke arrived as a volunteer for the Mississippi Summer Project. Teaching biology to Freedom School students in Meridian, Luke became one of more than seven hundred student volunteers who joined experienced Black civil rights workers and clergy to challenge white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state.

In straightforward language, A Letter to My White Friends and Colleagues encourages every White person to share his/her wealth with the Black community - plain and simple. Those who listen to the book will: understand the root causes of racial disparities in America; discover how you can personally contribute to reducing the inequality between Black and White people in the United States today; and get concrete recommendations on how to redirect your spending to Black-owned institutions to help decrease the racial wealth gap.
