Henry David Thoreau was a leading figure in the American Transcendentalist movement and the era of US literary emergence, an intellectual with worldwide influence as essayist, social thinker, naturalist-environmentalist, and sage. Thoreau's Walden, an autobiographical narrative of his two-year sojourn in a self-built lakeside cabin, is one of the most widely studied works of American literature. It has generated scores of literary imitations and experiments in back-to-basics living.

The older fellow brought less raw energy to the task, and his memory is a long way from infallible, but one can only hope he's offset these losses with a slight edge in judgment, in perspective, in maturity.

But where is the real Lawrence in all of this, and how - 100 years after the publication of Women in Love - can we hear his voice above the noise?

David Herbert Richards Lawrence nació el 11 de septiembre de 1885 en Eastwood, Inglaterra. Era el cuarto hijo de Arthur John Lawrence, un minero bebedor, y de Lydia Beardsall, antigua maestra, y amante de la cultura, que inculcó en David el interés por la pintura y la lectura. Inició una relación sentimental con Frieda Weekley, cuyo apellido de soltera era von Richthofen, mujer del profesor Ernest Weekley y familiar del famoso piloto Barón Rojo, Manfred von Richthofen.
