A poor little girl tries to sell matchsticks on a bitter cold New Year's Eve, when most people are having a party inside where it’s warm and are eating good food. She must earn money for her starving family, but no one buys her matchsticks. So she uses the matches to get warm and has an incredible experience on the last evening of the year.

The young prince wishes to marry and goes out into the world to find the princess he wants for his wife. When he meets the beautiful princess, he wants to find out whether she is as pure in her heart, as she is beautiful. So he disguises himself as a pig farmer in the King's stables and soon discovers the truth about the beautiful princess that is to be his wife.

A healthy soldier comes upon an old witch and a hollow tree while on his way home from the war. Before long, he has acquired an old lighter and all the money he could want. Meanwhile, the beautiful princess of the small town has been locked up by her own parents. The soldier falls in love with her - but cannot find a way to win her. Thanks to some good friends he made with the witch's help, he ends up avoiding public execution and winning the princess' heart.
