It’s the early days of the Mexican revolution. J. T. Latham is about to be killed by a Yuma Prison gang when an old nemesis, Deputy Del Buchman, intervenes. Latham will get a pardon if he uses his knowledge of the area and his experience with the Yaqui to guide Buchman’s posse deep into the Sonoran desert to rescue rich man’s kidnapped wife and children. The guerrilla general responsible wants machine guns for their safe return, but there is more to the ransom than guns.

Independence, Missouri, 1865. Seasoned wagon master Virgil Grissom prepares to lead a new group of families westward across the Oregon Trail. Among them are struggling farmer Matt Moran, his wife Katie, and their three small children. In spite of the long, treacherous journey ahead, Grissom is confident that this solid, hard-working farmer and his family are tough enough to endure the harsh elements, the rugged terrain, and the occasional run-in with hostile tribes. But he’s not so sure about the farmer’s younger brother, Clay, who plans to catch up with them along the trail.

Harrison Wilke is thoroughly sick of Redbluff, Kansas. The town is a boring dead end, filled with unlettered roughnecks. His uncle Stewart - from whom he stands to inherit the Running W Ranch - can't stand him. Harrison doesn't even have enough money to get to the big city, where he belongs. There are a few bright spots.
