The Life Engineered begins in the year 3594, when humanity is little more than a memory, a legend of the distant past - destined to reappear. Capeks, a race of artificial creatures originally created by humans, have inherited the galaxy and formed a Utopian civilization built on the shared goal of tirelessly working to prepare for their makers' return.

Jamie Waterman has made an important discovery on Mars. A cliff dwelling reveals the fact that an intelligent race lived on the red planet 65 million years ago, only to be driven into extinction by the crash of a giant meteor. But now the exploration of Mars is itself under threat of extinction, as the ultraconservative New Morality movement gains control of the U.S. government and cuts off all funding for the Mars program.

A man builds a time machine and tells his dinner guests that he can travel through time. He leaves from dinner in his machine for three hours and has adventures that include going back in time hundreds of years and forward in time millions of years, where he finds strange and dangerous places from which he is lucky to escape from. He returns and tells them of his adventures and shows proof of his travels by providing strange items from his pocket.

A man dressed in a long coat with bandages covering his face arrives in a small village and does not engage much in conversation. While striving to maintain his privacy, he receives what he calls his luggage, yet in reality is chemicals and laboratory supplies, thereby furthering the mystery around himself. Eventually, he reveals his name to be Griffin and later runs into Mr. Kemp, a former student from medical school. Griffin creates a diabolical plan after recounting to Kemp how he is able to create invisibility.
