"Masque of the Red Death", a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague known as the Red Death by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, has a masquerade ball within seven rooms of his abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure enters and makes his way through each of the rooms.

Though Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known for his detective stories, he also wrote other short stories which are masterpieces of mystery and suspense. In some of the stories, a supressed uneasiness gradually builds up and evolves into sheer terror; in others, the story line unexpectedly changes and comes to an unlikely conclusion. In "The Beetle-Hunter", a beginning doctor is employed on a strange errand to a coleopterist.

Written in 1933, this classic ghost story features Bowen's typically superb descriptions of desolation and decay. Bowen was born on November 1, 1885, on Hayling Island, Hampshire, and died December 23, 1952. She was a novelist and writer whose total output numbers over 150 volumes.

Two Tales From H. P. Lovecraft includes the American horror writer's short stories, "The Cats of Ulthar", of how a law forbidding the killing of cats came to be in a town called Ulthar, and "The Terrible Old Man", notable as the first story to make use of Lovecraft's fictional New England town of Kingsport. Both were written in 1920.
