Dopo l'8 settembre 1943 uno sparuto gruppo di studenti vicentini, guidato da un giovane professore antifascista, si dà alla macchia sull'altopiano di Asiago per tentare di organizzare la Resistenza. La voce narrante – autoironica, commossa e marcatamente autobiografica – dipana un lungo filo di agguati, rastrellamenti, uccisioni, "fughe" e "atti di valore" di cui i ragazzi sono protagonisti e vittime.

Il Seicento in Francia è dominato dalla figura del Re Sole, ovvero Luigi XIV della casata dei Borboni. Questo sovrano assolutista realizzò uno stato nel quale il re era sciolto dalle leggi (legibus solutus), essendo il suo potere superiore a chiunque altro all'interno della nazione. Ridusse la nobiltà alla totale obbedienza, costruì una sfarzosa reggia a Versailles e obbligò i nobili a trasferirvisi lasciando i propri possedimenti.

Annalena Tonelli è stata una donna strordinaria. Appassionata del prossimo fino ad annullare se stessa, come missionaria laica, totalmente indipendente, ha operato in Africa tra popolazioni musulmane, salvando vite, curando ammalati e bambini, sopportando l'ostilità maschilista fino a restarne vittima. La animava un fuoco interiore che le ha consentito di realizzare opere riconosciute a livello mondiale, anche se lei rifuggiva dai media e dai sensazionalismi. Una storia poco nota seppur incredibile.
