Au départ, "L'Arlésienne" est une nouvelle d'Alphonse Daudet extraite des "Lettres de mon moulin" qui deviendra au fil du temps une pièce de théâtre en trois actes, pour laquelle Bizet a composé une œuvre spécifique. De cette pièce est tirée l'expression "l'Arlésienne". En effet, le personnage de l'Arlésienne est le centre de l'intrigue. Cependant, elle n'apparaît jamais sur la scène. On appelle donc "l'Arlésienne" une chose dont on se préoccupe beaucoup, mais qui n'apparaît jamais.
