Vi møder Gurli og Lars, da de som helt unge finder sammen og tager voksenlivets udfordringer op én for én ved hinandens side. Bogen handler samtidig om arbejdernes kamp for et bedre liv og bedre arbejdsvilkår og om kommunismens fremstød i Danmark i 1960‘erne. John Max Pedersen (f.1942-1992) var en dansk kommunist, arbejder og forfatter. Som 14-årig meldte han sig ind i DKU og kæmpede siden som værftsarbejder for arbejderens rettigheder.
