The Walker, the Driver, and Otto is the memoir of a year in the life of the Walker: Physical education teacher, masters record-holding swimmer, on a 1987-88 sabbatical to walk around the approximate perimeter of the U.S.; the Driver: Former teacher, writer, naturalist, artist, musician, composer, and support person for the Walker; and Otto: 1978 VW camper van, shelter, sanctuary, retreat, blind, study; formerly tested on an Alaskan roundabout.

The smell of cigarettes replaced the tang of bone-broth and sprouted sourdough, the neighbors sometimes came to blows and under no circumstances would anyone wear active wear in public. Muddling through in terrible French pushed Rachael's family to their limits. Some days, everybody cried and ate their feelings with croissants. But the town of Sommières embraced these ragtag Australians.
