Timo liebt Haie und das Meer, aber besonders liebt er Papa! Timo hat einen großen, uralten Haifischzahn am Strand gefunden – ein schöneres Geschenk für seinen Papa, der nicht mit in den Urlaub fahren konnte, gibt es nicht! Papa musste arbeiten, es gab ein gutes Jobangebot, das glaubt zumindest Timo. Wie schön es sein wird, ihm von Italien zu erzählen: vom Strand, vom Meer und vom Tauchen. Und dann kommt alles ganz anders. Denn tatsächlich hat Timos Vater die Familie verlassen – im Haus ist sein Zimmer leer. Nur ein abgefallener Knopf von Papas Lieblingshose liegt auf dem Boden.

Thirteen-year-old Dirk has been the man of the house since his papa disappeared while fighting against the Nazis with the Dutch Resistance. When the Gestapo arrests Dirk's older sister, who is also a Resistance fighter, Dirk fears that he and his little sister, Anna, might be next. With only pockets full of food and his sister asleep in his arms, Dirk runs away to find his father. As Dirk leads Anna across the war-torn Netherlands, from farmyards to work camps, he must rely on his wits and his father's teaching to find his way.

Adam and Thomas is the story of two nine-year-old Jewish boys who survive World War II by banding together in the forest. They are alone, visited only furtively every few days by Mina, a mercurial girl who herself has found refuge from the war by living with a peasant family. She makes secret journeys and brings the boys parcels of food at her own risk.
