Writer and political activist Mike Marqusee was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in the summer of 2007. At first, disinclined to share his misery with others, he was reluctant to write about his illness. But he then came to realize that doing so provided a precious continuity with his life as a writer before contracting the disease, and a way of reaching out to a wider world that the illness made physically less accessible.

When Amy Nappa was unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage IV-B uterine cancer, her life and that of her husband's, Mike, changed forever. Cancer rates continue to skyrocket, and the overall survival rate for stage IV cancer patients in the United States is a grim 2.1 percent. Clearly, the extensive use of expensive - sometimes ineffective - toxins in conventional oncology protocols is a failing strategy. Even the few survivors of these harsh slash-and-burn treatments can have a dismal quality of life, suffering with ailments such as nerve damage, heart muscle disease, and liver and kidney failure.
