HARRY NOLAN is an expatriate American, making a meager living as an illustrator for a low-paying magazine, but his life is upended when he is assigned to illustrate an anonymous article about the death of a god—because a centuries-old French brotherhood, the sauteurs, are determined to suppress the story the article tells. In der Einleitung wird der Leser unter Bezugnahme auf ein deutsches Buch – den Hortulus animae aus dem Verlag Hans Grüninger – darauf vorbereitet, dass es Geheimnisse gebe, die zum Glück ebenso unergründlich seien wie dieses Buch unlesbar...

Ich weiß nicht mehr, wann oder wo ich mit jenem prächtigen Menschen bekannt wurde, dem Brevet Brigadier-General John A. B. C. Smith. Nur soweit entsinne ich mich, irgendjemand stellte mich dem Herrn bei einer öffentlichen Versammlung vor, die wohl aus einem bedeutsamen Anlass auf einem Platz abgehalten wurde, dessen Name mir leider entfallen ist. In Wahrheit strebte ich für meinen Teil diese Vorstellung mit einer gewissen nervösen Verlegenheit an, und die erstickte denn auch andre Eindrücke wie die von Zeit und Ort.
