Mona, bufona, bruja, espía, mal espíritu o caníbal. Estos fueron algunos nombres que la población local utilizó para referirse a Heike Behrend durante sus investigaciones de campo en África Oriental. Con el tiempo, comprendió el significado de estos calificativos: eran formas que tenían los pueblos estudiados para referirse a lo extraño, a lo ajeno a la comunidad. En concreto, «mona» fue el nombre con el que se refirieron a ella los habitantes del pueblo Bartabwa, en Kenia, con el que convivió un tiempo.
