During the mid-1980s, Howard Marks had 43 aliases, 89 phone lines, and owned 25 companies throughout the world. Whether bars, recording studios, or offshore banks, all were money-laundering vehicles serving his core activity: dope dealing.

Collins became a next generation Mickey Spillane, creating memorable titles and characters of his own such as Road to Perdition and Quarry. He's worked in all kind of media, from scripting Dick Tracy daily comic strips from 1977-93 to writing the novelizations of movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Air Force One and American Gangster and creating his own one-man show Eliot Ness: An Untouchable Life. The crowning achievement of his career, however, may have been when Mickey Spillane - the best-selling mystery writer of the 20th century - chose Collins to be his literary executor.

He has to vie for her attention with his best friend, Steve, who soon becomes involved with a band of outlaws led by the villainous Trampas. Captured for cattle rustling, the film climaxes with a showdown between Trampas and the Virginian in a classic shootout on a dusty Western street.

Mr Punch Presents: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, following the fortunes of three ill-matched gold diggers, who are searching for treasure in Mexico. As they hunt for their elusive prize, the three prospectors become progressively more corrupt and greedy and fall foul of each other’s all-consuming greed, in this exciting adventure story. With Humphrey Bogart recapturing his role as the wicked Fred C. Dobbs and Walter Huston as the grizzled old-timer Howard, the role for which he received the Oscar as best supporting actor.

Mr Punch Presents: National Velvet, telling the story of Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor), the idealistic English farm girl with a passion for horses, who wins the spirited steed ‘Pie’ in the local town lottery. Her infectious enthusiasm encourages the embittered jockey Mi Taylor (Mickey Rooney) to train the horse ‘Pie’ for the Grand National - England's greatest racing event.

Mr Punch Presents: Rebecca, based upon the best-selling novel by Daphne du Maurier. Laurence Olivier plays Maxim de Winter, and Vivien Leigh is the shy and naïve ladies companion that he meets while holidaying in Monte Carlo. They fall in love, get married and return to Maxim's beloved Manderley in Cornwall, where the second Mrs de Winter now meets the mysterious Mrs Danvers and finds that Rebecca is not forgotten. The film was to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Mr Punch Presents: It Happened One Night, the winner of five Oscar’s including Best Picture is Frank Capra’s classic romantic comedy, telling the story of a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) who falls in love with a cynical reporter (Clark Gable) on a cross-country bus trip across America.

Mr Punch Presents: It’s a Wonderful Life, the irresistibly heart-warming story of George Bailey, who is prevented from committing suicide by the elderly angel Clarence, who takes him on a journey back through his life to show him how the town of Bedford Falls would have been had he never lived. Originally directed by the celebrated Frank Capra, it is performed here for radio with James Stewart, Victor Moore and Donna Reed recreating their original roles.

While most people who lived through the 1970s will remember Elliot Mintz for his Lennon-Ono connection, he was also quite an accomplished journalist, recording conversations with a who's who of the era, including Jack Nicholson, Allen Ginsberg, Mick Jagger, Salvador Dali, Dennis Hopper, Jayne Mansfield, and many, many more.

Like a lot of bands from that era, The Cowsills soon disappeared from view - 1910 Fruitgum Company, anyone? - and I didn’t give them much thought, until last week, when I was invited to watch a new documentary film by Louise Palanker, Family Band: The Cowsills Story, about the real family behind the singing family. Toni Tennille: A Memoir is an okay title for the Alabama native’s life story, but once you read it to the end, you might agree with me that "Toni Tennille: Happy at Last" is more fitting. I cannot deny that I had low expectations as I began reading the autobiography of this singer who I always adored as a teen and held on to over the decades as a guilty pop pleasure. The glamour, the celebrity friends, parties, etc. - ho-hum, we’ve certainly heard it all before. But trust me, you haven’t heard this story.

If you’re going to write a book about the Rolling Stones at this point in their history, you damn well better have something unique to say - which brings us to former Rolling Stone magazine associate editor in London, Robert Greenfield. There are two pictures on Tommy Roe’s website of him with The Beatles. I glanced at them the night before this interview and then moved on, looking for ideas about what to ask the man behind such immortal 1960s bubblegum hits as “Sheila", “Dizzy”, and “Jam Up and Jelly Tight". The Beatles knew Roe; they were one of the featured acts on his top-billed tour of the UK, and they recorded a cover of his number one hit from 1962, “Sheila". Tommy Roe’s had his first number one with “Sheila", of course, and subsequently charted a number of songs on the Top 10.

No one ever did undercover police work better or with more distinction than Joe Pistone, who you probably know better as "Donnie Brasco". Brasco became a household name in the 1980s as the undercover character played by Pistone, perhaps the ballsiest FBI agent ever. His six years undercover ultimately led to testimony that sent more than 200 mobsters to jail and - indirectly, several to their deaths. Pistone was famously portrayed by Johnny Depp in the 1997 movie, Donnie Brasco.

The story of Billy Hayes, an American tourist caught attempting to leave Turkey by plane in 1970 with bags of hashish taped to his stomach, for which he was subsequently jailed for five years - and, with only 42 days left to serve, resentenced to life in prison - was made into a major motion picture starring Brad Davis and written by Oliver Stone. But many key aspects of Midnight Express may have been invented by Stone.
