The Nose is a satirical short story by Nikolai Gogol written during his time living in St. Petersburg. During this time, Gogol's works were primarily focused on surrealism and the grotesque, with a romantic twist. Written between 1835 and 1836, The Nose tells the story of a St. Petersburg official whose nose leaves his face and develops a life of its own. The Nose was originally published in The Contemporary, a literary journal owned by Alexander Pushkin.

Thomas More's "Utopia" is a complex, innovative and insightful contribution to the development of political thought. The culmination of this work was a description of a country whose society lives according to the laws of nature, but is close to the ideas of the religion of Christianity - they have everything in common and gold is not valuable to them. Based on the ideas of Plato, St. Augustine and Aristotle, the Utopia novel has borne fruit, namely the dawn of new utopian and anti-utopian literature that includes the writings of such writers as Francis Bacon, Herbert Wells, Aldous Huxley and George Ourell.

Utopia (Libellus vere aureus, nec minus salutaris quam festivus, de optimo rei publicae statu deque nova insula Utopia, "A little, true book, both beneficial and enjoyable, about how things should be in the new island Utopia") is a work of fiction and socio-political satire by Thomas More (1478–1535), written in Latin and published in 1516. The book is a frame narrative primarily depicting a fictional island society and its religious, social, and political customs. Many aspects of More's description of Utopia are reminiscent of life in monasteries.

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel.

Bulgakov was a Soviet playwright, novelist, and short story writer best known for his humor and penetrating satire. Because of their realism and humor, Bulgakov's works enjoyed great popularity, but their trenchant criticism of Soviet mores was increasingly unacceptable to the authorities. Bulgakov's short stories are a world unto themselves—sharp, witty, and often unsettling. In these pages, the absurdity of Soviet life collides with the supernatural, the grotesque meets the comic, and reality is always just a step away from slipping into nightmare.

Ingersoll Lockwood (1841-1918) was a New York attorney, diplomat and lecturer who wrote children's books, satire, and poetry. 1900 or, The last President is a dystopian, alternative history book which was published in 1896 and ostensibly involves events of a few years later - the 1898 election that put William Jennings Bryan in power and led to civic unrest. As a work of political satire, the narrative deplores the rise of socialism and populism in its dystopian vision of the future.
