1938, Hitler visita l'Italia. Uno storico dell'arte irlandese, trasferitosi da tempo a Roma, è costretto ad accompagnare Mussolini e il suo ospite per gallerie e musei. Tra il fascino e il disgusto, ha l'occasione di osservare da vicino i due tiranni e di chiedersi se possa sfruttare l'occasione per "occuparsi" di loro. Con profondo imbarazzo è costretto però a constatare che manca della tenacia necessaria per passare all'azione. Trent'anni dopo, sua figlia si imbatte in una foto scabrosa che ritrae il padre con i due dittatori.
