The play takes place in Russia in the 1820s, in the house of the old Moscow master Paul Afanasevich Famusov, who has feudal beliefs and is an ardent opponent of education. In one such flophouse Mikhail Kostylev is ready to squeeze the very last penny from his unfortunate and disadvantaged guests. And there are further developments....
