Story2
Introduction If you come across any special trait of meanness or stupidity . . . you must be careful not to let it annoy or distress you, but to look upon it merely as an addition to your knowledge—a new fact to be considered in studying the character of humanity. Your attitude towards it will be that of the mineralogist who stumbles upon a very characteristic specimen of a mineral. —Arthur Schopenhauer

This is a delightful collection of stories about a few of the birds, puppies, ant-lions, spiders and other assorted bugs this lady either rescued or found and then observed carefully as they made their way to maturity. She is the most careful as well as compassionate observer of their tiny struggles to live and grow in the real world. Picking up abandoned bird chicks, digging for worms, turning over rocks, this amazing lady shows in every sentence that she loves the entire world of living creatures and then she has a knack of describing it plain language yet entertainingly. Ant-lions, ...

Story0
Enos Mills (1870-1922 ), naturalist and conservationist, was instrumental in the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park. Like his mentor John Muir, Mills was an intrepid solitary high country rambler, as well as an accomplished Colorado mountain guide. There are mountain tales aplenty in "Adventures of a Nature Guide." At one point, Mills climbs Long's Peak alone in a gale with winds topping 170 mph., "carried away with the wild, elemental eloquence of the storm." Near the summit, the wind is so fierce he cannot make headway, so he concludes to "reverse ends." "Putting a shoulder against a ...

Within its pages, youll find a rich historical narrative tracing the art of falconry from its ancient roots in the Middle East, long before the 9th century, to its decline with the advent of the hunting gun. Discover intriguing insights into falconry among the upper classes in Persia and Hindostan...

Story0
LibriVox volunteers bring you 8 recordings of Mother Nature by Emily Dickinson. This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for June 3, 2013While Emily Dickinson was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly eighteen hundred poems were published during her lifetime. The work that was published during her lifetime was usually altered significantly by the publishers to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time. Dickinson's poems are unique for the era in which she wrote; they contain short lines, typically lack titles, and often use slant rhyme as well as unconventional ...

Peregrine Falcon at the Eyrie

Story0
Bird-watching - and photographing - of a particular eyrie during the span of 3 years, where we see the female falcon hunting for food, while the tiercel - the male falcon - stays behind to feed and brood the chicks. A falcon chick is also known as eyas, hence the name eyrie for their nest. The name tiercel comes from the Latin for "third", either because of the belief that one in three eggs hatches a male bird, or from the fact that the male falcon is one third smaller than the female. - Summary by Rapunzelina

Story0
“Book of Monsters” by David and Marian Fairchild was published in 1914. Riveting descriptions of spiders and insects, from the perspective of both predator and prey, draw the reader into a world beyond the human perspective. Insightful accounts are given of body structures and behaviors employed by insects in their struggle to exist – a struggle which may conflict or align with that of the humans in their environment, and cause them to be viewed as enemy or ally. Additional enjoyment is provided by the explanation of innovative and elaborate photography techniques used to capture the ...

Story0
The little volume which is now presented to the notice of the lovers of the horse in America is a translation of the work of a distinguished French author, who, holding a high position of trust, made this as a report to the Government. His views in some respects may be regarded as extreme, but on the whole they are characterized by strong common sense and are supported by a practical familiarity with all the phases of his subject which should give them weight. The Percheron horse no doubt stands first among the draft breeds of the world. His value has been thoroughly tested in this country, ...
