A dark cloud has fallen over Nero Wolfe’s New York brownstone. For days, house chef Fritz Brenner has worn a worried expression, caused by the news from back home in Switzerland that his beloved cousin is missing. When a hired detective on the ground is unable to turn up any leads, Fritz takes it upon himself to return to Geneva and launch his own investigation. But it’s the kidnapping of Tommie Williamson that introduces Goodwin to the man who will change his life.

Archie Goodwin’s aunt Edna is about to lure him away from his work at Nero Wolfe’s New York brownstone. After a phone call, he heads off to Ohio, where the president of Farmer’s State Bank and Trust, an elderly widower, has died in an apparent suicide. But Archie’s aunt has expressed nagging suspicions - which only grow stronger when someone takes a shot at a local reporter who wrote about the case.

Created in 1934 by American mystery author Rex Stout, Nero Wolfe is one of the most iconic private investigators in crime fiction. As Watson did for Holmes, Archie Goodwin, Wolfe's confidential assistant, narrates the cases of the detective genius. Wolfe was an armchair detective who rarely left his luxurious brownstone in New York, so Archie would collect the facts and report back. Wolfe would probably not have taken on many cases had he not needed his client's money to pay for his two true passions: fine food and his orchid collection.
