Frolo veut alors faire enlever la belle, mais le capitaine de la garde, Phoebus, l'en empêche au dernier moment, et gagne ainsi l'amour d'Esméralda. La jalousie s'empare alors de l'archidiacre qui tue Phoebus et accuse la Gitane de son meurtre.
