Die etwas pummelige Tierärztin Eve hat die Nase voll! Genug von ihrer ständig nörgelnden Schwester, genug von der Einsamkeit und vor allem genug von Männern. Da kommt ihr eine geerbte Rinderfarm in Oklahoma gerade recht. Eve beschließt, Chicago für eine Weile zu verlassen, um die Ranch gewinnbringend zu verkaufen, doch sie hat die Rechnung ohne die taffe Vorarbeiterin Bobby gemacht. Zwischen den Frauen entbrennt ein erbitterter Kampf um das Anwesen, doch Eve muss einsehen, dass sie in Oklahoma vielleicht mehr findet, als nur das große Geld.

Eve und Bobby sind seit drei Jahren ein Paar und haben den Plan umgesetzt, straffällig gewordene und aus schlechten Verhältnissen stammende Jugendliche aufzunehmen. Trotz der neuen Aufgabe sehnt sich Eve nach einem eigenen Kind, doch Bobby ist nicht bereit, eine Familie zu gründen und Eve weiß nicht, wie sie ihre Freundin überreden soll, diesen Schritt zu wagen. Überfordert und uneinsichtig zieht sich Bobby zurück. Statt mit Eve offen über ihre Gedanken und Gefühle zu reden, wendet sie sich mehr und mehr der geheimnisvollen Jenny zu, die eines Tages auftaucht und nur Probleme verursacht.

Jenny hat alle Hände voll zu tun, um ihre Pferdezucht aufzubauen. Schweren Herzens hat sie Grace aus ihrem Leben und ihren Gedanken verbannt, doch dann erhält sie unverhofft einen Anruf von Graces Vorgesetzten, der ihr mitteilt, dass Grace schwer verletzt im Krankenhaus liegt. Jenny fliegt auf der Stelle nach Houston, um dort festzustellen, dass Grace weder sie noch irgendjemand anderen erkennt. Nach ihrer Genesung nimmt Jenny sie mit nach Bird Creek und muss erstaunt feststellen, dass Grace ein völlig anderer Mensch geworden ist.

Doch eines Tages verschwindet eines der betreuten Mädchen spurlos. FBI-Agentin Grace Lewis ermittelt undercover und zieht als neue Lehrerin auf Bird Creek ein.
