Deidre Clark-Morris is a faithful Christian who has everything she could dream of - except the children her heart longs for. Kenisha Smalls has lived in poverty all her life. She has three children by three different men and has just been diagnosed with inoperable cancer. While the meeting between these two women appears accidental, it becomes their catalyst of hope. A hate group operating in Oakland County, Michigan, has claimed responsibility for a six-month-long string of arson fires and robberies at mosques, temples, and Black churches around Detroit, eluding police and federal agencies. The most recent fire, at a mosque in Dearborn, kills a respected imam. His children—suspicious of law enforcement’s treatment of Muslims and afraid of reprisal—hire Charlie Mack and her team of investigators to find their father’s murderers.

Black, a small-time thug with big dreams, discovers the demand for crack cocaine in the Virginia housing projects where he lives and sees the drug as a meal ticket for his family. His younger cousin, Lo, who idolizes Black, joins him in his business endeavors. But as they work side by side with hustlers and killers, the pair is soon thrown into situations beyond their control, and the bonds of their family are thoroughly tested.
