Paige Barrett was living her dream as a journalist in New York City, racking up bylines as a staff writer at The Razor, a cutting-edge online magazine. With Niko Sopoaga, a young South Auckland constable working alongside him, Bill falls into the dark and dangerous world of drug distribution and a hardened motorcycle gang wreaking havoc, while they chase a clever killer.

The man who had died was Ismay's stepfather, Guy. Nine years on, she and her sister, Heather, still live in the same house in Clapham. But it has been divided into two self-contained flats. Their mother lives upstairs with her sister, Pamela. And the bathroom, where Guy drowned, has disappeared. Ismay works in public relations, and Heather in catering. They get on well. They always have. They never discuss the changes to the house, still less what happened that August day.

All the stories in this book either fed into or grew out of the year I spent as crimewriter-in-residence on the St. Peter's Riverside Sculpture Project in Sunderland, 1993-94. At the time it seemed as though it had to be one of the strangest jobs in the country; retrospect assures me that I was too cautious in my judgment, and it was in fact the strangest job in the known universe.
