Zum Geburtstag bekommt Per von seiner Großmutter eine Briefmarkensammlung geschenkt. Nicht sehr spannend, findet er. Doch da entdeckt er unter dem Album alte Briefe. Sie stammen aus der Feder eines Mädchens namens Ska. Merkwürdig: Ska hat vor achtzig Jahren in Afrika gelebt. Das sieht Per an den Briefmarken und auch daran, dass er die Schrift nicht entziffern kann. Aber seine Großmutter kann Sütterlin lesen und liest ihm die Briefe vor.
