G. K. Chesterton was a journalist, playwright, poet, biographer, novelist, essayist, literary commentator, editor, orator, artist, and theologian. Orthodoxy is his great apologia for the Christian faith, which was prompted by a serious attack in 1903 against Christianity by well-known newspaper editor Robert Blatchford.

Viewing human nature as one that seeks the dichotomy of both imagination and reason, he argues that the Christian faith is the only true fulfillment of both of those needs. Chesterson explains that Christianity is the only faith that can answer the basic needs and desires of all humans because it has both in its very structure. A rigid morality combined with an allowance for some interpretation of truth and way of life, Christianity resolves the human need for a life that follows both logic and romance.

Orthodoxy, first published 1908, is Chesterton's spiritual autobiography. Subtitled, 'The romance of faith', Chesterton declares that people need a life of 'practical romance; the combination of something that is strange with something that is secure.'

Saint Athanasius (c. 296 - 298 - 2 May 373) was the 20th bishop of Alexandria. He was a fierce Trinitarian and a champion of orthodoxy who opposed four Roman emperors and many prominent churchmen of his time. This work begins with the creation, making it clear that the redeeming Word is also the Word which creates. Athanasius contends that the Godhead is present in every particle of creation, and especially in the person of Jesus Christ who is The Word. In his view of atonement, Jesus is the Christus Victor - the hero who defeats Satan and, thereby, destroys death.
