Story0
This first collection of the correspondence of Oscar Wilde begins with the Irish playwright's earliest extant letter, thanking his mother for the hamper she had sent to him at school. It includes letters about his travels in Italy, his American lecture tour, the staging of his first play (Vera, or the Nihilists), arrangements for the publication of a friend's poetry collection, and exchanges in the press with artist James McNeill Whistler. The letters, some of which have been excerpted or redacted, are sourced from auction catalogues, newspapers, biographies, and other texts in the public ...

Who can help but laugh when an ordinary journalist earnestly suggests limiting the artists creative freedom?” “We are forever governed by journalism.... Journalism reigns eternally.” One of the most notorious British tabloids missed the chance to partake in the moral frenzy surrounding Oscar Wilde’s trials in 1895. Yet, hypocritical journalists masquerading as moral guardians were abundant then, just as they are now. This expertly curated compendium, assembled by editor Stuart Mason, concludes with a gripping transcript of Wilde’s first appearance at the Old Bailey, where he faced ...

Trial of Oscar Wilde (Dramatic Reading)

Story0
In 1895 Oscar Wilde was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labor. This account of his two trials was compiled from the original shorthand court reports by an anonymous author. While a more complete account of the trial was published several years later, it omitted the more 'sensational' exchanges. This shorter version was clearly intended for a more prurient reader. In it we hear Wilde's famous defence of "the love that dare not speak its name", and see the evidence mount as a succession of attractive young men step into the witness box to tell their tales. - Summary...

Oscar Wilde: His Life and Confessions

Story0
Consumers of biography are familiar with the division between memoirs of the living or recently dead written by those who "knew" the subject more or less intimately, and the more objective or scholarly accounts produced by later generations. In the case of Wilde, as presented to us by Frank Harris, we are in a way doubly estranged from the subject. We meet with Oscar the charismatic talker, whose tone of voice can never be reproduced – even if a more scrupulous biographer had set down his words accurately – and we are perhaps already aware of him as Wilde the self-destructive celebrity who...

The world, if we choose to see it, is a rich tapestry woven from the threads of people dressing and undressing. The history of humanity unfolds through the conversations of a small band of tailors, seated cross-legged and engaged in timeless gossip, each feeling their importance across the ages. In this exploration, I focus entirely on civil costume‚the attire that individuals choose to wear, rather than the uniforms dictated by ecclesiastical roles, military duties, or professional callings such as law. These garments symbolize the professions of their wearers and have been thoughtfully ...

In this exploration, we are confronted with Wilde as both the charismatic conversationalist and the self-destructive celebrity who has become a symbol of gay identity and martyrdom. Harris, a flamboyant literary figure himself, offers a portrayal of Wilde’s homosexual experiences that reflects the attitudes of his time—seeing them as exclusive to the elite and not a contagion. To truly understand Wilde, we must navigate through a multitude of ...
