Intended to be a defense of the Christian religion, Pensées is a penetrating collection of thoughts on faith, reason, and theology. Unfinished at the time of Pascal's death, the book consists of philosophical fragments on the "wretchedness" of man and the controversial schisms of the church at the time. It includes the philosopher's infamous wager encouraging belief over agnosticism, as well as his thoughts on numerous other topics. Endlessly quotable, Pensées overflows with pearls of wisdom, each elusive sentence pregnant with a universe of thought.

Compiled after his death in 1662, Pascal's "pensées" (thoughts) are his ideas for a book in defense of faith in a rational world. These fragments give evidence of a profoundly original thinker who had resolved the conflict between his scientific mind and heart-felt faith. This audiobook begins with an analysis of the difference between mathematical and intuitive thinking and goes on to consider the value of skepticism, contradictions, feeling, memory, and imagination.

Pascal illuminates the substantial differences between the early church and the Church of today. Formerly, it was necessary to forsake the world in order to be received into the Church, while people now enter the Church at the same time as they enter the world. There was thus an essential distinction between the world and the Church, the two being considered as two opposites.

The piano composition includes Nocturne in G Major, Op. 37 No. 2 - Andantino. The nocturne is painted with Chopin's most ethereal brush, characterised by beautiful sensuousness and luscious soft, rounded tones, and not without a certain degree of languor.
