We all want to feel energized, optimistic, and fulfilled each day, thankful for the meaningful people and activities in our lives. Yet many people lack this kind of joy and vitality. Why? One major reason is they have not made peace with their past. Often people carry pain from past troubled relationships into their current relationships. They are weighed down by shame that toxic people once tried to put on them. Or they hold on to mistakes and failures, never able to forgive themselves. Either way, they struggle to find the freedom that God offers.

Story0
In 2015, the historian Chris Momany helped discover a manuscript that had been forgotten in a storage closet at Adrian College in Michigan. He identified it as the journal of a nineteenth-century Christian abolitionist and missionary, David Ingraham. As Momany and a fellow historian Doug Strong pored over the diary, they realized that studying this document could open new conversations for twenty-first-century Christians to address the reality of racism today. They invited a multiracial team of fourteen scholars to join in, thus launching the Dialogue on Race and Faith Project.

Pain. It is part of the human experience and one of the things that help us grow to maturity. But for some of us, the pain we have experienced feels crippling. Broken promises, dysfunctional families, damaged relationships, and rejection keep us from experiencing the abundant life Jesus promised. The Bible, however, offers great hope for pressing on. From the book of Ephesians, learn who you really are and why the pain of your past doesn't have to obscure God's plan for your future.
