New York, 1942, notte fonda. Willowjean "Will" Parker racimola qualche soldo facendo la guardia in uno spettrale cantiere edile armata di una spranga di piombo. Nonostante le apparenze, sembra proprio che si trovi nel posto giusto al momento giusto. Abile tuttofare del circo e destrissima lanciatrice di coltelli, senza saperlo ha appena salvato la vita alla detective privata più famosa e meno ortodossa della città: Lillian Pentecost, una distinta signora in tailleur che, a causa di una malattia degenerativa, si aggira sostenendosi con un bastone.
