From the grapes of Provence, the owners of this impeccably managed syndicate have squeezed international fame and fortune. Next to their spectacular estate lies the petite Peregrine Winery, whose shadowy owners suddenly make repeated requests to buy Willesford's property - raising their offer each time. Unable to discern Peregrine's motive for these attempts, the Willesford group sends for London's gourmet detective, a sleuth with impeccable reasoning and an even finer palate.

Der französische Meisterkoch Jacques Pistoux und seine adelige Geliebte Charlotte Sophie lassen Sizilien hinter sich und erreichen nach einer abenteuerlichen Odyssee Wien. Doch die unziemliche Liaison scheitert am Standesdünkel der hochherrschaftlichen Verwandtschaft. Also ist der Amateurdetektiv Pistoux wieder einmal auf sich allein gestellt und gerät unversehens in eine hinterlistige Intrige, als er in einem Kaffeehaus unfreiwillig zum Komplizen eines Mordes wird.

Nach seinem Abenteuer als Leibkoch eines Lords beschließt Jacques Pistoux, der britischen Insel den Rücken zu kehren und mit einer amerikanischen Reisegesellschaft eine Kreuzfahrt auf dem Mittelmeer zu wagen. Adventszeit 1881. Im Stadtgraben von Nürnberg wird ein Junge tot aufgefunden. Im Mund entdeckt die Polizei ein Stückchen Lebkuchen. Wenig später wird der Ratsherr Jakobus Ehrenhoff am Henkersteg aufgeknüpft. Um seinen Hals baumelt der Rest eines vergifteten Lebkuchenherzens. Pistoux scheint der rechte Mann an der rechten Stelle zu sein, denn die Ermittlungen drehen sich im Kreis und der in einer stadtbekannten Zuckerbäckerei arbeitende Meisterkoch kennt sich aus mit dem Gebäck.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 1880: Nach seinem Abenteuer in Wien will sich Jacques Pistoux nach Frankreich durchschlagen: Unterwegs engagiert ihn ein adeliger Landsmann, der Deutschland bereisen will. Doch die Fahrt der kleinen Entourage wird zur Tour de force. Pistoux beobachtet höchst verdächtige Gestalten, zudem häufen sich mysteriöse Vorfälle. Die Reisegruppe erreicht Elsass-Lothringen und sucht Zuflucht auf einer Burg. Zu spät stellen die Franzosen fest, dass sie in eine Falle geraten sind.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 1878: Nach seinem Kreuzfahrtabenteuer hat es Jacques Pistoux an die Gestade Siziliens verschlagen, wo er sehr bald wie ein Fisch im Netz der ortsansässigen Mafiosi zappelt. Eine unselige Fügung des Schicksals spült den Meisterkoch zudem in die Hände des Großgrundbesitzers Don Franco. Kaum ist er im Palazzo des Despoten angelangt, muss er auch schon um sein Leben kochen. Doch Pistoux teilt das Schicksal im goldenen Käfig mit einer schönen Unbekannten, die ebenfalls entführt wurde. So wird ihre gemeinsame Flucht zu einem waghalsigen Wettlauf mit der Zeit.
