Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (1779) by the Scottish philosopher David Hume examines whether one can rationally come to any conclusions about God's nature. Three philosophers, Demea, Philo, and Cleanthes, debate this question in a series of dialogues. While all three agree that a god exists, they hold different views on God's nature.

The concept of life as a pilgrimage, or a path from ignorance to realization, is central in the writings of the philosopher and New Thought pioneer James Allen (1864-1912). According to Allen, all men must and will follow this path, at the end of which is a state of spiritual satisfaction, which can be attained only by the earnest efforts of the seeker. While progress along the path necessitates the "strenuous tread" of the pilgrim, there are also valuable opportunities for rest and refreshment.

In this pamphlet, Emma Goldman criticises Christianity as society’s fundamental support structure. She considered herself as the heir of German iconoclasts like Friedrich Nietzsche and Max Stirner. In her view, Christianity undermined human potential by stripping people of their strength, courage, and agency.
