“The Promise of Discovery” is a podcast hosted by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center that highlights research in intellectual and developmental disabilities. The goals of the podcast are to host conversations about research in plain language and to highlight “real world” implications. The discussions cover why the research matters in the lives of people with disabilities and families, how the research impacts and enhances what we know already and/or raises additional questions in the field, and what implications the research might have for policy.

Peril and Promise: The Challenge of Climate Change is a special WLIW-FM half-hour program focusing on the unique challenges and choices confronting eastern Long Island. A reporting initiative from the WNET Group, the program is hosted by veteran journalist and Planet Forward creator, Frank Sesno.  Together with a panel of experts and local officials, he explores the effects climate change is already having on eastern Long Island, what communities are doing about it now, the challenges ahead, and what citizens can do to engage and take action.

Helmet designers have so far failed to account for a key cause of brain injury - the kinetic energy that travels through the head after an impact and makes the brain slosh inside the skull. That’s according to Ellen Arruda, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Michigan, who is leading an effort to change that. She and her colleagues have unveiled a prototype of a new helmet technology capable of dissipating a significant portion of that kinetic energy before it reaches the brain.

Could a neck-worn device protect the brains of athletes and soldiers against traumatic injury? That’s the promise of technology that researchers are beginning to test in humans after several years of animal studies.
