Igraine is happily married to Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, even though his withdrawal from the Mysteries and the Goddess have created a strain between them, as well as friction between her and her mentor Vivian, the Lady of the Lake. While they are visiting King Uther Pendragon at his castle, Uther makes it obvious to the entire court that he desires Igraine to be his queen. Later, he corners her in the hall, and when Igraine informs Gorlois of what happened, Gorlois gathers his people and abruptly leaves the festivities, later declaring war on Uther.

Cinder Shade and his fellow cadets have survived a brutal mission in the vast wilds of the Dagger Mountains. These interconnected stories are set in an opulent quasi-historical world of magick and high manners called the Republic of Califa. The Republic is a strangely familiar place - a baroque approximation of Gold Rush era-California with an overlay of Aztec ceremony - yet the characters who populate it are true originals: rockstar magicians, murderous gloves, bouncing boy terrors, blue tinted butlers, sentient squids, and a three-year-old Little Tiny Doom and her vengeful pink plush pig.
