Eloise Worthington is living her best afterlife. It helps that she was accidentally deposited in the supernatural section where immortals are put out to pasture. As the lone human among gods, witches, and a bevy of other species, it's all too apparent that she and her cat Mischief don't belong, not that Eloise minds what anyone else thinks. The excitement quickly dies when the star of the show chokes to death on the cherry of his signature cocktail. It seems like a tragic accident—until his ghost communicates otherwise to resident psychic Mia Thorne. Too bad he can’t identify the culprit.

Annoying but loving family? Check. Picturesque small town with a hot police chief? Check. A rescue hellhound, a black cat with attitude, and a pet python that thinks he’s a puppy? Triple check. My story has all the hallmarks of a sweet and cozy supernatural tale, but there’s a twist—I am evil. Well, I’m supposed to be evil thanks to both nature and nurture, but I fight it with every fiber of my being. I just want to live a normal life. I even joined the FBI instead of the Federal Bureau of Magic, until my powers reared their ugly head and the agency sent me packing back to my hometown.

I’ve had enough. I’ve been at odds with my family for as long as I can remember. And I’ve been at odds with myself. Light and dark. White and black. Good and evil. To hell with the scales of justice, my mother and Grandma deserved what they got for the recent wrong done to my beloved Chief Fox. If that means finally embracing the fury within, then so be it. Except then I'm no better than they are. Meanwhile, there’s a new supernatural threat in town, but I’m too preoccupied to put on my badge and get to work.

I foolishly believed this day would never come, that life in charming Chipping Cheddar would always be pleasant and somewhat predictable—but all good things must come to an end. And it seems the dormant portal is no exception.
