For nine months, since a devastating solar flare caused a complete failure of the electrical grid, Shelby Sparks and her diabetic son, Carter, have been living at the ranch of Shelby's high school sweetheart, Max Berkman. Mostly insulated from the chaos surrounding them, Shelby and Max discover that the Texas government has fled the capitol and is barely maintaining control of the state. The governor needs volunteers to search for the new federal government, but no one knows exactly where it might be located - if it even still exists.

Whispers of a new civilization in the New Mexico desert and a chance encounter with a band of renegade soldiers convince them to strike out on the open road, to abandon the relative safety of the farm and fall in with strangers. But the living may be worse than the dead.

We return to the story of Seth and Melinda, siblings who've fallen in with the likes of Noone Tompkins, a bad man with a fast gun and a cruel disposition. The group's journey south, to a promised oasis in the New Mexico desert, is interrupted by a war between the citizens of Billings, Montana and the scattered survivors of the Crow Nation.
