Wer von der Höhe der Zinnen von Nottingham, der festen Stadt, herabblickt, erkennt in der Ferne einen dunkelgrünen Waldstreifen. Das ist der Sherwood, der sich weit durch das englische Land zieht. Dort lebte zur Zeit des Königs Richard, den alles Volk wegen seines hochgemuten, tapferen Wesens „Löwenherz“ nannte, als Waldvogt Herr Hugh Fitzooth von Locksley. Er war ein Nachfahre der angelsächsischen Geschlechter, die einst mit ihren Drachenschiffen zur britischen Insel gestoßen waren und dort seither als Freisassen gelebt hatten.

A rich widow lived with her daughter and her stepdaughter. The widow favored her younger biological daughter, allowing her to become spoiled and idle while her older stepdaughter was left to do all the work. Every day the stepdaughter would sit outside the cottage and spin beside the well. One day, she pricked her finger on the point of the spindle. As she leaned over the well to wash the blood away, the spindle fell from her hand and sank out of sight. The stepdaughter feared that she would be punished for losing the spindle, and in panic she leapt into the well after it.

Snow-White and Rose-Red are two little girls living with their mother, a poor widow, in a small cottage by the woods. Snow-White is quiet and shy and prefers to spend her time indoors, doing housework and reading. Rose-Red is outspoken, lively and cheerful, and prefers to be outside.
