For twenty-four-year-old Oliver Popp, autism is just another fact of life. As long as Oliver sticks to a comfortable itinerary planned in advance, he gets by just fine as a staff writer for Offbeat Traveler magazine. But a curveball drops into Oliver's budding career when his first feature assignment takes him to Washington, DC, to chronicle the latest tourism trends. His freelance project photographer is Ricky Warner, a gregarious and impulsively adorable shot of adrenaline.

When a young drifter is found murdered in the desert outside of Palm Springs, the police start their investigation - but it's crime reporter Sam Perry who gets to the bottom of the story. Working her way backward to piece together the victim's mysterious life, Sam gets drawn into the seedier side of the glamorous resort town, a world of strip clubs, blackmail, and betrayal. All suspicions point toward former A-list actress and now mayoral candidate Ellen Konrad, a woman that Sam can't quite figure out.

Max has settled nicely into life in Welling. He's got the best boyfriend ever born and a life he never imagined he could have. He's also written his new screenplay, and the hottest director in Hollywood has snapped it up enthusiastically. Things take a turn for the worse when one of the actors is murdered, and the best suspects are Max, his family, and his houseguests. The sheriff is no help at all, so Max needs to discover who the killer is before someone ends up behind bars.
