Der sterbende König nimmt seinem treuesten Diener Johannes das Versprechen ab, seinen Sohn zu unterrichten und ihm alle Kammern im Schloss zu zeigen, außer der letzten, in der das Bild der Königstochter vom goldenen Dache steht. Der Königssohn merkt, wie der treue Johannes ihm ein Zimmer nicht zeigen will, und besteht darauf. Er fällt in Ohnmacht vor dem Bild der Königstochter und will sie unbedingt haben. Auf Rat des treuen Johannes wird eine Tonne feinstes Goldgeschirr geschmiedet, mit dem sie als Kaufleute vor ihr Schloss segeln.

Einem reichen Manne, dem wurde seine Frau krank, und als sie fühlte, dass ihr Ende herankam, rief sie ihr einziges Töchterlein zu sich ans Bett und sprach: "Liebes Kind, bleib fromm und gut, so wird dir der liebe Gott immer beistehen, und ich will vom Himmel auf dich herabblicken und will um dich sein." Darauf tat sie die Augen zu und verschied. Das Mädchen ging jeden Tag hinaus zu dem Grabe der Mutter und weinte und blieb fromm und gut. Als der Winter kam, deckte der Schnee ein weißes Tüchlein auf das Grab, und als die Sonne im Frühjahr es wieder herabgezogen hatte, nahm sich der Mann eine andere Frau.

Das Märchen das von den Brüdern Grimm niedergeschrieben wurde, handelt von der wunderschönen Königstochter Schneewittchen. Deren Stiefmutter ist jedoch neidisch auf sie, da die Stiefmutter die Schönste im ganzen Land sein möchte. Deshalb erteilt sie einem Jäger den Auftrag, das Mädchen zu töten. Schneewittchen kann sich jedoch retten und flüchtet in das Haus der sieben Zwerge. Die bösartige Stiefmutter erfährt von ihrem Zauberspiegel, dass sich ihre Stieftochter zu den Zwergen gerettet hat und versucht sie darauf mit einem Schnürriemen, später mit einem Kamm und schließlich mit einem vergifteten Apfel zu töten.

Der jüngere Sohn wird vom Vater nicht beachtet. Wenn die anderen am Feuer Geschichten erzählen, "gruselt" es sie. Später soll er etwas lernen, da will er sich gruseln. Er läutet dem Küster die Glocke, der stellt sich nachts als Gespenst dazu, da stößt ihn der Junge die Treppe hinunter. Dann geht er schlafen. Die Küstersfrau jammert, ihr Mann hat sein Bein gebrochen, und der Vater schickt seinen Sohn fort. Weil er unterwegs vom Gruseln raunt, das er nicht kann, zeigt ihm einer den Galgen, da über Nacht soll er es lernen.
