One typical Friday morning in February 1997, two masked men dressed in body armor and carrying automatic rifles burst into the Bank of America in North Hollywood, California and started shooting. They forced customers to the ground, stuffed hundreds of thousands of dollars into a duffel bag and exited out the back…where they were surrounded by police. For the next 44 minutes, the armed robbers and police engaged in a deadly gunfight.

In today’s world, virtually anything can be captured on video. But it hasn’t always been this way. Ashley France-Howell dives into the stories of Black victims of police brutality in the United States.

Oridinary Criminals is a collection of stories by probation officer Doug Heckbert about real people who have been convicted of real crimes and who have been on probation, on parole, or in prison. The story "Go Ahead and Shoot Me," for example, is about a woman who shot her husband upon his insistence and who, like many other subjects in the book, have come to see their offences as being pretty stupid. These stories show the human side of criminals not just the crimes they committed.
