Energy is vital for a good standard of living, and much of the world's population does not have enough. Affordable and adequate sources of power that do not cause climate change or pollution are crucial; and renewables provide the answer. Wind and solar farms can now provide the cheapest electricity in many parts of the world. Moreover, they could provide all of the world's energy needs.

The sunshine that hits the Earth in a single hour could meet the world's food and energy demands for an entire year. If only we could make use of it, that is. Solar power is not just about turning sunlight into electricity - we also need a way of capturing and storing it, of moving it around to where it's needed. Of providing power during the night. In short we need a way of bottling sunshine so we can have as much of it as we want, wherever and whenever we like.

Più volte, negli ultimi decenni, l'Italia è diventata protagonista in negativo delle prime pagine dei giornali, nazionali e internazionali, a causa della cosiddetta "emergenza rifiuti". Le città d'arte del Belpaese sommerse dai rifiuti sono un'immagine che purtroppo ricorre periodicamente, suscitando l'interesse momentaneo della classe politica di turno per poi ritornare nell'oblio senza che sia stata trovata una soluzione definitiva.

Il mondo moderno dipende ancora pesantemente dal carbone, dal petrolio e dal gas naturale per procurarsi l'energia di cui ha bisogno. I carburanti fossili non sono però rinnovabili. Questo significa che queste fonti di energia tenderanno a esaurirsi, diventando sempre più costose e più difficili da reperire. Ai ritmi di consumo attuali, il carbone potrebbe durare ancora un secolo e il metano forse due. Dall'altra parte, abbiamo le energie rinnovabili, come quella solare o quella eolica.
