Tatiana Caldwell's childhood in London is idyllic and filled with the love of doting parents. But when they die in quick succession, she's left heartbroken and destitute. In 1864, at seventeen, she emigrates to Australia, determined to build a new, financially secure life for herself. After an apprenticeship as an undertaker's assistant with Crowe Funeral Services, Tatty marries owner Titus Crowe. Titus himself soon dies, and Tatty inherits the business, becoming Sydney's only female undertaker.

The time has come for the annual Miss Tangorli beauty pageant, and Poly Monroe has agreed to use her fabric store's inventory of shimmery silks to create gowns for for a crown. But when the man who revived the city's citrus trade with his imported Tangorli tree is found dead days before the pageant contestants are announced, something sour takes over the town. To make matters worse, Poly's closest friend is caught up in the crime, having been seen in the company of the case's prime suspect.
