Stephen McGown was en route from London to South Africa, on a once-in-a-lifetime trip by motorbike, returning home to Johannesburg. He had reached Timbuktu, in Mali, when he was captured, along with a Dutch and a Swedish national, by Al Qaeda Islamist militants. Steve was taken because he held a British passport. He was subsequently held hostage at various camps in the Sahara Desert in the north-west of Africa for nearly six years before eventually being released.

Der Norddeutsche Gerhard Rohlfs (1831-1896) ging 1856 als Fremdenlegionär nach Algerien und lernte Arabisch. In den nächsten Jahren unternahm er mehrere Expeditionen nach Timbuktu und erreichte als erster Europäer die Oase Tafilalet. Im Mai 1865 versuchte er von Tripolis aus die Sahara zu durchqueren, was ihm mit einigen Umwegen auch gelang. So musste er schon in Ghadames die Route wegen feindlicher Tuareg ändern und reiste stattdessen über Murzuk im Fessan zum Tschadsee.
